WOW! 65+ attendees at our last meeting. Another record for BostonPHP! It's great to see the PHP/OSS community thriving in Boston.
Thanks very much to:
Steve Zimmerman - Optaros
Gabe Ricard - iMax Websolutions
Max Carlson - OpenLazlo
Adam Peller - IBM
For their fantastic presentations on AJAX and its related technologies. The take-away? Web 2.0 continues to hurtle toward the thick client feel of traditional client/server while maintaining the small footprint we've all come to know and love (can you say browser-wars?). And while AJAX definitely gets us closer, there are still outstanding issues of accessibility (508c), security, and of course the umpteen flavors of JavaScript, jscript, and jib-jab supported today (can you say browser-wars?) that need to be addressed. All that said, it's definitely the direction to provide the rich user experience that the consuming public is looking for.
Products/Proposals/Press Releases - announcements during the meeting
Both IBM and OpenLazlo made announcements during the February meeting: Max introduced and demonstrated OpenLazlo's ability to generate and support AJAX for all the major browsers (read more here). Adam introduced the AJAX Toolkit Framework (ATF). The ATF is a proposed open-source project to be incubated within the Eclipse Web Tools Platform (WTP) Project (read more here).
IBM and OpenLazlo reinforced their commitment to "Open Ajax" , an initiative to drive collaborative innovation to make the web easier to use (read more here).

March BostonPHP user group - Understanding open source licensing (March 2nd at 6:30 PM at IBM in Cambridge.)
Whether you're a newbie or seasoned pro; weekend hacker or finishing your thesis on open source, if you're writing, modifying or distributing open source you'll eventually bump into the issue of Open Source Software (OSS) licensing.
Being the recalcitrant sort - immediately removing labels "under penalty of law" and clicking the accept button on any shrink wrap license - you probably have never fully appreciated the impact these legal instruments can/will have. Now there's no excuse not to.
Our panel of legal experts
-
Karen Copenhaver - General Counsel, Blackduck software;
-
Ira Heffan - Associate, Goodwin Proctor LLP;
-
Andrew Updegrove - Gesmer Updegrove LLP, and
-
Terry Ilardi - Copyright Counsel IP & L, IBM Corporation
will discuss the bleeding edge of OSS licensing, covering topics such as:
-
GPLv3 (recently announced);
-
how open standards (like ODF) interact with open source, and
-
what constitutes derivative work
This is an opportunity to listen, learn and ask questions to a group that's arguable some of the best in OSS licensing field. As always, these events are free (as in beer) and open to all (as in source), but please be sure to RSVP so we know how much hot cocoa to make.
