Rich Internet Applications via PHP and Flash Earlier this month, Mike Potter (Adobe's Developer Relations team) gave an excellent introduction to Adobe Flex Builder (currently in beta) and how it can integrate with a PHP based backend using AMFPHP. Adobe Flex Builder is an Eclipse based tool that helps developers build Rich Internet Applications that get delivered via the Flash player. Mike Potter has extensive experience with PHP, having created the website for the largest amateur sporting organization in Canada (the Canadian Curling Association). Mike also ran the Mozilla Calendar Project for a year after that. He joined Adobe a year ago, and is now working in Developer Relations as an evangelist for open source and web developers. Those interested in hearing Mike's presentation (about an hour) about Flex Builder, Flash 9, AMFPHP and a whole lot more web (and non-web) related stuff can Listen Now! You can also visit Mike's blog at http://blogs.adobe.com/mikepotter/. PLEASE NOTE: Although the Flex SDK is free of charge, neither it nor Flex Builder (its Eclipse based IDE big brother) are open source and the later comes with a license fee "significantly under $1,000". For some that might be reason enough to sit this one out, for others in a production environment, the pain/performance ratio might make this a no-brainer. - ed

While at the LinuxWorld show in Boston, I had the opportunity to meet with Clint Oram VP & General Manager of SugarCRM (www.sugarcrm.com), a PHP based Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system that's going head-to-head with proprietary enterprise apps like Siebel Systems and Salesforce.com.
Clint is one of the three founders of Sugar with a strong technical and product background out of HP. He was one of the principle architects of the system and originally intented to use PHP simply as a prototyping language. I asked Clint to share with us Sugar's reasoning for choosing stay with PHP and then to elaborate a bit on their business model which with their Sugar Public License is firmly set in the OSS belief.
The code is maintained in the SugarForge where anyone can download and use the code (via CVS), those interested in support and added Enterprise features can purchase a commercial license from Sugar. SugarCRM is both an on demand application (via sugar) or a resident application. The product is written in PHP 4 and runs with mySQL, Oracle, and soon PostreSQL. The architecture supports plug-ins from third party developers - check out the forge to see what's what. Those interested in hearing my full interview with Clint can Listen Now! (pardon the show floor background noise).

Last week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Pito Silas, Brian Del Vecchio, and David Beisel to mull over the evolving web 2.0 business models. Both Pito and David had blogged about this topic in the past and I thought it might be interesting to get together to exchange our views in real time. Pito is the founder of BlogBridge - a cool open source project focused on delivering a great news reader and news discovery system for professionals, David is currently a Principal at Masthead Venture Partners and also the founder of the Web Innovator's group, Brian Del Vecchio has been in the computer networking industry for 20 years. Brian blogs about the Boston area web scene at the newly launched BostonWTF.com.
The conversation wends its way through risk-sharing, abundance of software, loosely coupled transactions and even broaches the possibility of incentive pricing as a means of monetizing development.
