Image Servers - 2005/05/27 01:22 I was wondering if anyone has dealt with any image server products before? I was Googling around and found MediaRich from Equilibrium.

We handle, literally, millions of property photos. We have about 2 million currently, and are adding about 2,000-10,000 per day. Those numbers are only going to grow larger as we expand our service area. Essentially it's all handled with a database to track the photos and they're all stored in an evenly distributed directory structure.

I keep thinking "there has to be a better way" and I'm wondering if there are any products out there targeted at usage like this: storage for large amounts of photos, web interface to use the photos from specific websites, perhaps additional processing at request time (resize as thumbnail, mostly), etc.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has used a product that you'd recommend for implementing this functionality efficiently.

I've been working on one of my own from scratch, but I also checked out a couple of others that help some promise. I'll post again if you're still curious and want to know the names. I know your post is quite old. At one point I was contracting for a photographer that needed an easy solution that ran from his local machine, in servicing his clients, and showcasing other photos available for licensing to the public.

If you don't feel like installing it yourself (or you don't have a hosting account), there's an outfit called smugmug.com. I know of a couple of photographers using their service, and they're quite happy with it.
